By propelling water into the air, fountains increase oxygen absorption when the water droplets come into contact with the atmosphere and then re-enter the water. This method is particularly well-suited for relatively shallow ponds, generally those under six feet in depth, where water needs light circulation and oxygenation. If you prioritize beauty along with moderate aeration and have a small, easily accessible waterbody, a fountain aerator could be the right choice for your pond.

Surface aerators work by agitating water at the pond's surface, enhancing oxygen levels in the upper layers and promoting gas exchange. This form of aeration is ideal for ponds with an average depth that does not exceed ten feet—typical examples include paddle wheels and other floating devices. Surface aeration can be particularly effective in preventing the formation of algae and eliminating foul odors, making it optimal for moderately shallow waterbodies with a high degree of sunlight exposure. Bottom-diffused aerators are often called "bubblers" and are designed for deeper waterbodies, generally with depths exceeding 10 feet. These systems pump air from compressors on the shore through tubing to diffuser units located on the pond's floor, releasing small bubbles that rise to the surface and help circulate oxygen evenly throughout the water column. This technique is effective in preventing stratification, where different water layers have varying oxygen levels. If your pond or lake is quite deep and has complex ecological needs due to stratification, a bottom-diffused system may provide the most thorough aeration solution to maintain a healthy aquatic environment.
